Herbert Mennonite Brethren Church began services in 1904, and formally organized in 1905. The first building was occupied in 1908, with a subsequent building program in 1957. Jacob J. Martens is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through immigration from the Soviet Union.

The congregation was instrumental in founding Herbert Bible School in 1913 which merged with Bethany Bible Institute in 1958. In the early years, the Mennonite Brethren and General Conference Mennonites shared a schoolhouse as a place of worship.

An honorarium was paid to the pastor, H. A. Neufeld, beginning in 1919, although a full-time salaried position did not come into effect until 1944.

In 2015 the congregation changed its name to Grace Community Church.
