Jacob Hendriks (Hendricx, Henrixen, Hendrikse), (later called Jacob Hendrics Smit), until his death in 1724 a Mennonite preacher of the United Flemish and Waterlander Noorderkaai congregation at Blokzijl, Dutch province of Overijssel, was charged by the Reformed classis of Vollenhove with Socinianism and suspended from his ministry by the States of Overijssel on 1 August 1684. In 1686 he was allowed to preach again but in 1699, after publishing a catechetical book, Onderwijs na den weg ten hemel (1698), he was summoned before a Reformed Synod at Zwolle. Because Hendriks refused to sign a statement drawn up by this Synod he was imprisoned in January 1700. After half a year he was released; since he refused to pay the required fine, his furniture was publicly sold. He continued to preach and is likely the author of Praetje bij de weg, in which he gave a critical report about his troubles. These troubles also disturbed the congregation; because of his liberal ideas the more conservative part separated from the main body to found a new congregation about 1700.
