Glarean (Heinrich Loriti of Glarus, Switzerland) (1488-1563), able humanist scholar, an important teacher of Conrad Grebel during his humanist years in Basel (1514-1515) and Paris (1518-1520), and along with Vadian a major influence on him. Under the influence of Erasmus in Basel (from 1514 on), Glarean became an enthusiastic humanist and opponent of the Reformation. After three years in Basel (1514-1517), where he operated a student bursa or boarding house with private lessons, he transferred to Paris, where he operated a similar bursa 1517-1522. Grebel studied Latin and Greek and humanistic studies one year with him in Basel and a short time in Paris (October to December 1518). Through him Grebel was introduced to the outstanding French Humanists in Paris, Faber Stapulensis, William Bude, William Kop, and Nicholas Beraldus. Glarean first made Grebel a humanist in Basel; Vadian continued the development in Vienna.
