Hans Blüetl, a Hutterite martyr, was captured on a missionary journey at Ried in the Innviertel (at that time Bavarian, now Austrian) in the house of a pretended brother who wished to receive the reward for his capture, was burned at the stake 24 June 1545, after futile attempts had been made by cunning and torture to make him abandon his faith. Even on the faggots he proclaimed the Gospel to the spectators. With great courage he endured the fiery death, singing hymns of praise until he collapsed. The traitor, tormented by remorse, committed suicide. An unknown author wrote Blüetl's story of suffering in a poem of 44 stanzas, "Aus Eifer der göttlichen Ehr," which appeared in the Jahrbuch der Gesellschaft für die Geschichte der Protestanten in Oesterreich XIII (1892) 82-91, as well as in Die Lieder der Hutterischen Brüder.
