American Mennonite Aid Committee
The American Mennonite Aid Committee was founded on 4 April 1884 in Newton, Kansas, to help Mennonites in Aulie Ata and Khiva, Central Asia, come to America. The officers elected were Bernhard Regier, president; David Goerz, secretary; A. Sudermann, treasurer; members were Christian Krehbiel, Dietrich Gaeddert, Heinrich Richert and Wm. Ewert. The minutes of this meeting and an appeal for contributions were printed in Christlicher Bundesbote (15 April 1884). It stated that some $10,000 were needed to help about 26 families come to America. The following issues of the paper carried reports about the need, help given and the coming of these families to America. In Beatrice, Nebraska, where a large number of the families settled, a special Nebraska Aid Committee functioned. After the settling of the families the American Mennonite Aid Committee was discontinued.
