Almosenpfleger is a designation for deacons in the Mennonite churches of Baden, Germany. As co-directors of the congregation it is their duty to direct the material work of the church. They are to have charge of the offerings of the church, to support the needy with these funds, to be concerned for the widows and orphans, to visit the sick, to assist the elders in carrying out the duties of their office and to see that members live a Christian life and that the ministers preach the true Word of God. Furthermore, it is their duty to attend the meetings of the elders of the Baden Gemeindeverband, to take part in the deliberations and to see to the execution of their decisions in the churches. In every congregation there usually is an unsalaried deacon, who is elected from the membership. Besides this, the poor fund of the Gemeindeverband is in the care of one of the deacons; this fund is made up of alms not needed by the individual congregations and is used according to need for the support of the poor.
