Hans de Smet (d. 1559)
Hans de Smet (official name Jan Symens) was an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake on 7 August 1559, at Ghent, Belgium. He was a native of Waasten (Warneton) in Flanders and a cloth dyer by trade. He was arrested at Ghent on Friday after Pentecost, together with a large number of members of the Ghent congregation. Hans remained steadfast, as did his wife Tanneken Gressy, executed at Ghent on 27 June 1560, after she had given birth to her child. The names of Hans and the other martyrs executed at Ghent in 1559 are found in a song, "Ick moet een liet beginnen" (I must begin a song), which is found in the Liedtboecxken vanden Offer des Heeren, No. 14.
