Daniel E. Mast was an Old Order Amish leader and was born in Holmes County, Ohio, on 16 October 1848, and died at his home near Hutchinson, Kansas on 29 September 1930. He was baptized into the Old Order Amish Church in Holmes County in 1867. In November 1870 he was married to Catherine Miller, who died 16 years later. A few months later, in April 1886, a widower with eight children, he moved to the vicinity of Hutchinson. In October 1888 he married as his second wife Elizabeth Stutzman, who died in a little over five years. As his third wife he married Elizabeth Kauffman of Oregon, who died 25 years later. He then married Barbara Helmuth, who preceded him in death by six months. He was the father of 16 children.

Mast was ordained deacon in 1891 and minister in 1914. In his early married life he tried to arouse an interest in the Amish churches in Holmes County to start Sunday schools, but sentiment was too strong against them. Later in Kansas he took an active interest in the Sunday school as long as health permitted. He was very influential in his church as deacon and minister.

During the time of his ministry he visited nearly all the Old Order Amish churches in North America, his main themes being "Salvation Through Christ," and the "New Birth Through the Holy Spirit." Nearly all his conversations in visiting were spiritual, often getting a spiritual conversation started before the team was fully unhitched. When the Herold der Wahrheit was started in 1912 he took an active interest in writing and took advantage of the opportunity to spread out among the churches his deep knowledge of the Word of God; he had written many articles ahead at the time of his death. Most of his writings were printed in a 784-page book, Anweisung zur Seligkeit (Baltic, Ohio, n.d., ca. 1930). A selection was printed in English in Lessons in the Sermon on the Mount (Weatherford, Oklahoma, 1953).
