John G. Hochstetler: minister of two small congregations at Calkins and Clyde Park, Montana, and a minister and bishop in the Mountain View Mennonite Church at Creston, Montana. He was born at Shipshewana, Indiana, on 28 February 1896 and died at Stevensville, Montana, on 20 February 1984. He married Emma Birky on 14 June 1920. Together they had five children.
John Hochstetler's mother died when he was three years old and he was taken into another home for a time. The family lived in Indiana, North Dakota and Wisconsin where John made his commitment to Christ in 1917. Shortly thereafter he was baptized and joined the Forks Mennonite Church near Middlebury, Indiana. In July of 1918 he was drafted for military service which he discharged as a conscientious objector until the end of the war.
On 14 November 1921 John Hochstetler, then recently married, was ordained to the ministry and given charge of two small congregations at Calkins and Clyde Park, Montana. From there he was called, in the fall of 1928, to serve as pastor of the Mountain View Mennonite Church near Creston, Montana. He was ordained a bishop in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite conference on 3 August 1941.
John Hostetler was active in organizing Winter Bible School and Summer or Daily Vacation Bible School classes. He was also active in evangelistic work.
The Hochstetlers retired and moved from Creston to Hamilton, Montana, in 1967. Emma Hochstetler died in 1980 and John died four years later. They were members of the Woodside Mennonite Church at the time of their deaths.
