Kalff (Calff, Kalf) is a Dutch Mennonite family of Zaandam, province of North Holland, which played an important part in the economic prosperity of this town. They were merchants and shipowners, often engaging in whaling as far away as Greenland. Cornelis Michielsz Calff (1652-1721), who was a shipbuilder and equipped a number of boats for his own business in whaling grounds near Greenland, and who was consulted by Peter the Great of Russia when he visited Zaandam in 1717, was a preacher of the Flemish congregation of Zaandam from 1680, and of the United Flemish and Waterlander Nieuwe Huys congregation from 1687 till his death in 1721. His son Nicolaas Kalf (Claes Cornelisz Calf, 1677-1734), who was a wholesale dealer, shipowner, and manufacturer of Zaandam, and was known for his excellent collection of coins and other art treasures, was a promoter of the founding of the West Zaandam Mennonite orphanage in 1713-1714. J. Kalff, a lawyer, was one of the founders of the congregation at The Hague in 1880-1881.
