Epp, Peter G. (1888-1954)
Peter G. Epp, author and teacher: b. 13 August 1888 in Petershagen, Molotschna Colony, South Russia, the fifth of seven children of Gerhard Epp (1848-1916) and Elisabeth (Fast) Epp. He was married twice. His first wife was Helene Matthies (d. 1924), whom he married in 1912 in Altonau, Molotschna Colony, South Russia; they had two sons, Arnold and Constantine. On 6 June 1926 he married Justina Dueck (b. 4 November 1885, Muntau, Molotschna Colony – d. 4 February 1955, Ontario), daughter of Johann Dueck (1856-1922) and Justina (Giesbrecht) Dueck (1857-1892); they had one son, Harry. Peter d. 9 January 1954 and was buried in Union cemetery, Columbus.
Epp was educated at the Teachers' Institute at Halbstadt, Russia, the Predigerschule (1906-1908) at Basel, Switzerland, the University of Heidelberg (1908 ff.), Germany, and received his Ph.D. at the University of Basel (1912). After this he taught at the Barvenkovo School of Commerce, Russia (1912-1918), and the Teachers' Institute at Halbstadt, Russia (1918-1924).
In 1924 Peter immigrated to the United States; he lived at Bluffton, Ohio, serving on the faculty of Bluffton College until 1934. In that year he joined the faculty of the Ohio State University at Columbus, Ohio, teaching German and Russian. In 1946 he became ill with tuberculosis, after which he never completely regained his health, though he taught some courses.
Peter Epp was an outstanding Mennonite author. His published works included Die Erlösung, Eine Mutter, Johanna, and Das Geisslein. His wife prepared his largest work, "An der Molotschna," a manuscript, on which he made some entries four days before his death, for publication. Other manuscripts, "Eros Multiformis" and "De Homine," were accepted by the University of Basel for safekeeping until the year 2000.
