Cornelis Douwes was a preacher of the Mennonite congregation (Jan Jacobsz group) on the Dutch island of Terschelling in the first decades of the 18th century. His grandson with the same name (b. 1712 at Terschelling, d. 1773 at Amsterdam) was director of the Algemeen Zeemanscollegie (School of Navigation) at Amsterdam. He was a man of great learning whose arithmetical theories in the field of nautical science were generally adopted and operative until the 19th century.
