Braun, Johann Jakob (1851-1928)
Johann Jakob Braun, born 1851 at Halbstadt in the Molotschna settlement in South Russia, son of Jacob Braun and Justina Giesbrecht, the third child, had two sisters and one brother. In 1875 he married Katharina Letkeman; to them were born three children. He attended a secondary school at Halbstadt, and became a schoolteacher at Blumstein (Molotschna settlement). He was a member of the Lichtenau Mennonite Church and became a minister there in 1876. Later he moved to Samoylovka, a new Mennonite settlement in the Ekaterinoslav province, serving as a leader of this young pioneer group. From 1906 to 1908 he was a minister at the Anadol forestry camp among young Mennonite men drafted for state service. After 1924, he was elder of the Samoylovka congregation. He died in 1928 of a heart attack.
The Samoylovka Mennonite Church which he served was founded in 1889. It had three ministers for a long time: Johann Braun, Johann Driedger, and Hermann Enns. It was served by elders of older churches until 1924, when Johann Braun was ordained an elder. After his death the church disintegrated.
