Hendrik van Ro(o)sevelt, was a Mennonite elder in Flanders, Belgium. Concerning his life and work little is known. In 1566, probably shortly after Easter, on the invitation of the Mennonite emigrants from Flanders to the Dutch province of Friesland, he went to Friesland and stayed in Harlingen or Franeker until August 1566. The Flemishhad invited him to help in settling their discord with the Mennonites of Friesland, who had received them kindly but soon objected to some differences in the manner of dress and living. Van Roosevelt tried to mediate, but he showed partiality to the Flemish. The discord culminated in a schism and the Frisian Mennoniteswere banned by Dirk Philips; then Hendrik van Roosevelt likewise banned the Frisians. In 1568 van Roosevelt stayed in Emden, East Friesland, and in the fall of 1569 he was sent with Jan van Ophoorn, an elder of Emden, and a certain Laurens, an elder at Franeker, to Cleve to arbitrate a dispute in that congregation. At that point van Roosevelt disappears from history. He probably returned to Flanders, where under his influence the congregations, particularly those of Antwerp and Gent, sided with the Flemish party against the Frisians. This Hendrik van Ro(o)sevelt may be the Hendrik (van) Rosenfelt, of Antwerp, who came to Montau, West Prussia, in 1586, and was the progenitor of the Mennonite Rosenfeld family.
