Matheeux Maurisz (d. 1572)
Matheeux Maurisz (Mattheeuw Marinissen) was an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 13 March 1572 at Middelburg, Dutch province of Zeeland. (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen (1908): 17, erroneously gives 1569 as the year of execution.) Matheeux and his wife Magdalene Jansdochter lived at Middelburg, outside the Langevyle gate of the city. Matheeux, 43 or 44 years of age, had been (re) baptized about 1559. Both he and his wife, who suffered martyrdom on the same day, are said "to belong to the sect of the Mennonites."
