Wellman (Iowa, USA)

Wellman, Iowa, in northwestern Washington County, had a population of 1,126 in 1958 (1,393 in 2000), among whom were at least 40 Mennonite families. Twelve Mennonite families lived in adjoining Daytonville. Nine Mennonite businesses are operated in the town. Although not exclusively Mennonite, the widely known Maplecrest Turkey Farms, long the largest independent turkey-processing corporation in the world, was established by a local Mennonite, A. C. Gingerich. This organization has created many economic opportunities and considerable employment for the town and community. In 1953, for instance, 125 farmers were raising turkeys for processing in the Maplecrest plant. The Wellman Mennonite Church in the northern part of the town had a membership of 330 in 1957, and the nearby Daytonville Mennonite Church had 81. In the 1950s Wellman was a shopping center for a large Mennonite population living mostly north of the town. (See map of Johnson County.)
