Southern Star Mennonite Church (Geiger, Alabama, USA)
The Southern Star Mennonite Church in Geiger, Alabama, USA was established in 1976. The congregation had its roots in 1970 when the Ervin Koehn family moved to the area from Cimarron, Kansas. They and subsequent families who moved to the Geiger wanted to farm soybeans. The small group officially organized on 30 April 1976 with 35 members.
In September 1976 the congregation rented a house in Geiger and remodeled it to serve its needs. Minister Harold A. Schmidt moved to Geiger in October 1977. As the group was growing, it purchased a lot in town and constructed a building in which they first held services on 10 December 1978.
Children attended the South Haven Mennonite School in Macon, Georgia until the congregation opened the Southern Star Mennonite School in 1985.
Over the years, farming became a less viable occupation. Occupations have included truck driving, dirt moving, and day labor. A number of families have been active in aquaculture, including a catfish processing plant.
In 2020 the congregation was part of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The ministers were Derek Koehn and Alan Nichols.
