Sunset Hutterite Colony was founded in 1977 as a division from the Glendale Hutterite Colony.

A daughter colony of the Sunset Hutterite Colony is the Blue Sky Hutterite Colony (Revillo, South Dakota, USA).

In 2017 the Sunset Hutterite Colony was a Schmiedeleut Group 2 colony.
