Pierijntgen, an Anabaptist martyr, is the subject of two accounts in van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, both inaccurate and incomplete. In one instance she is called Pierijntgen van Male, and in the other Pierijntgen Maelbouts. The research by Verheyden has revealed additional facts. Pierijntgen (Pyrinken) van Male was born at Thielt, Flanders, and lived at Malebosch. She was the widow of Jacob de Backere. She and her sister Marijtgen (Martyncken) suffered martyrdom by beheading at Ghent, Belgium, on 12 December 1564. The two women are commemorated in the hymn "Alsmen schreef duyst vijfhondert jaer ende twee en tsestich mede," found in the 1578 and the following editions of the Lietboecxken.
