Jan Schut (Schutte) was an Anabaptist martyr. A hymn composed by him, "O heer God ick magh wel clagen met suchten so menichfalt" (O Lord, I may well lament with many sighs), is found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, 1563 and following editions. This hymn in German translation, "Ach, Gott, ich muss dir klagen," is found in Ein schon gesangbüchlein Geistlicher Lieder of about 1565. This hymn shows that he held Menno's doctrine of the Incarnation. A song, "Godt, wilt ons salveren, het lijden coemt ons aen" (O God, wilt Thou save us, for suffering is near), commemorating the suffering of Jan Schut, is found in Veelderhande Liedekens of 1569. This song relates that Jan was tortured and put to death at Vreden, in the territory of Münster, Germany. The Dutch martyrbook of 1615 adds that he died in 1561 and the martyrbook of 1617 reports that he was executed by beheading. He had been baptized in 1543 by Leenhart Munsels. Both songs are inserted in Wackernagel, Lieder.
