Frankfort Hutterite Colony (Frankfort, South Dakota, USA)
The Frankfort Hutterite Bruderhof of the Dariusleut group (1904-1918), now abandoned, was located on the James River, nine miles south of the town of Frankfort, South Dakota, a daughter of the original Wolf Creek colony. The site was purchased by members of the Wolf Creek Bruderhof in 1904. By 1918 the settlement consisted of 20 families. The participation of the United States in World War I created some difficulties for them with respect to their nonresistant position, and they decided to migrate to Canada, where their young men would be excused from military service. On 20 May 1918 they purchased 4,000 acres 18 miles southeast of Macleod, Alberta, and established the Stand-Off Colony. Other Hutterites in South Dakota followed their example and acquired land near Stand-Off, so that by 1923 nine Bruderhofs were established in a radius of 40 miles. Thus the Frankfort colony led the emigration and was the pioneer Hutterite colony in Canada. The Frankfort colony initiated the publication of the Lieder der Hutterischen Brüder (Scottdale, 1914), a collection of hymns hitherto found only in manuscript form, copied from originals now preserved in various archives of Austria and Hungary. In this Bruderhof was also found the original manuscript of the great Hutterite Geschicht-Buch, which was generally believed to have been lost, and which was then used by Prof. Wolkan in editing the Geschicht-Buch (published in the Stand-Off Colony in 1923), and which was published in a letter-perfect edition by Prof. Zieglschmid in 1943. Elias Walter was the elder of the Wolf Creek-Frankfort-Stand-Off Bruderhof from 1903 to 1928, and the outstanding leader of the entire Hutterite brotherhood in North America.
