Cathalijne (Calleken) and Suzanneken Claes, Anabaptist martyrs, the daughters of Lieven, who was put to death at Ghent, Belgium, on 27 September 1549. They had been baptized at Ghent in the spring of 1572 by the bishop Paulus van Meenen. Both were unmarried; Suzanne was 25, Calleken 24 years old; they were living in Ghent. First they were imprisoned in the city prison, and after the inquisitors had vainly tried to make them renounce their faith, they were burned at the stake on the Vrijdagsmarkt on 3 December 1573 (van Braght says 4 December). Before the execution took place a ball was put in their mouths, preventing them from speaking to the people who had assembled to watch the execution. Calleken is called Calleken Draeyarts by van Braght in the Martyrs Mirror; this name was not found, however, by Dr. Verheyden, who studied the official documents.
