D.P Neufeld officiates at organizational meeting

The Thompson United Mennonite Church in Thompson, MB began services in 1961, and formally organized in 1963. The first building was occupied in 1963. John F. Wiebe is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through colonization of northern Manitoba and outreach by the Conference of Mennonites in Canada.

In 1965 there were 33 members; in 1975, 41; in 1985, 22; in 1995, 37; in 2000, 37. The congregation has been affiliated with Mennonite Church Manitoba, Conference of Mennonites in Canada / Mennonite Church Canada (1973-) and General Conference Mennonite Church (1977-1999). The language of worship is English.

The congregation applied for membership in the Mennonite Brethren conference in 1968 as well. Since they were refused dual Mennonite Brethren and General Conference membership, they withdrew both applications at the time.

The leaders of the congregation have included John Harder (1963-1965), Ernie Sawatzky (1968-1972), Archie Jantzen (1974-1975), Tom Neufeld (1976-1978), Gloria and Vern Redekop (1982-1984), Allan Froese (1988-1989), Bea Shantz (1990-1991), Don Read (1992), Joan Blatz (1994-1999). There have been a number of gaps in pastoral leadership.

The church's address is 365 Thompson Dr., Thompson, MB, R8N 1W2. (204) 677-2789.
