Markham Christian Worship Centre (Markham, Ontario, Canada)
When war came to Sri Lanka, many people fled. Germany was the first country to accept Tamil refugees. A Christian revival took place there in the 1980s among the Tamil people who were generally of Hindu background. Later some of these new Christians emigrated to Canada and began to form churches. The Markham Christian Fellowship in Markham, Ontario, which began meeting in 2001, first connected to Mennonite Church Eastern Canada through the Wideman Mennonite Church. The Hagerman Mennonite Church offered use of their building as a meetingplace. Hagerman's pastor continued a link to the new group.
The style of worship is charismatic, with a sermon in Tamil with some translation into English. Fellowship meals follow the service. Joseph Savarimuthu and a board of elders provided pastoral leadership in 2009. The group became an emerging congregation with Mennonite Church Eastern Canada in April 2009.
