Joost (Joos, Josse) Verkindert (Ver Kindert, Verkinderen), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Antwerp, Belgium, on 12 or 13 September 1570, with Laurens Andries, after they had been arrested there during the night of 30-31 May. In prison Joost wrote 28 letters, which have been collected in Sommige Brieven, Testamenten ende Belijdingen geschreven door Joos Ver Kindert, and published in 1572 (likely printed by Gillis Rooman at Haarlem, Holland); a copy of this 1572 edition is found in the Library of the Leiden University. The volume was reprinted 1577 (no place nor name of printer); a copy of this second edition is found in the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite Library]]. The first letter is dated 3 June 1570, the last 12 September 1570. Eighteen letters were written to his wife, eight to his mother or his brothers and sisters, one to his congregation of Antwerp, and one to all the brethren and sisters in (the congregation) of Harlingen and Franeker (Dutch province of Friesland).

Of these letters only the following eleven were included in the Dutch martyr books, including van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror: No. 3 (to his wife, mother, brethren and sisters), No. 7 (to the church of God at Antwerp), No. 10 (to his brother Willem), No. 12 (to his wife), No. 15 (to his mother), No. 19 (to his wife), No. 21 (to his brother W.), No. 22 (to his wife and to all the brethren and sisters in the Lord), No. 23 (to his wife), No. 26 (to his brothers and sisters), No. 28 (farewell-letter to his wife, after he had been sentenced to death).
