Cornelis Douwes was a preacher of the Mennonite congregation (Jan Jacobsz group) on the Dutch island of Terschelling in the first decades of the 18th century. His grandson with the same name (1712, Terschelling-1773, Amsterdam) was director of the Algemeen Zeemanscollegie (School of Navigation) at Amsterdam. He was a man of great learning whose arithmetical theories in the field of nautical science were generally adopted and operative until the 19th century.
