Camill Gerbert studied at the universities of Strasbourg, Zürich, and Tübingen; in 1886 he was made pastor in Saarebourg (Lorraine) and in 1898 accepted a call to Biebrich a. Rh. At the outbreak of World War I he went to Belgium as a chaplain. In January 1918, at the request of his congregation, he returned to Biebrich, where he died 27 May 1918. He is the author of the meritorious work, Geschichte der Strassburger Sektenbewegung zur Zeit der Reformation 1525- 1534 (Strasbourg, 1889). It is based on thorough research in the sources and is a valuable study of Anabaptism in Strasbourg, though it is now superseded, especially by Hulshof's work. The author's viewpoint is that of the Protestant Church, but he treats the Anabaptists with a refreshing objectivity, even though he does not do justice to some individual leaders like Hans Denck. The book marks great progress from the research done by T. Wilhelm Röhrich; therein lies its lasting significance.
