Cate, Gerrit ten (1825-1910)
Gerrit ten Cate, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, was born 14 October 1825 at Sneek, the son of the mayor Steven ten Cate and his wife Johanna van Delden. In 1851 he became minister at Wormerveer-Noord, in 1852 married Maria Anna Craandijk, who died in 1896. In 1858 he took over the congregation at Drachten, and in 1883, when he began to age, the much smaller one at Wolvega where he served until his retirement in 1891. After that he resided in The Hague, in Apeldoorn, and in Doorn, where he died on 13 July 1910. He was an adherent of the modernist movement and in 1868 agitated for the formation of a general union of all liberals of Holland. He did not succeed, but his work was the first step toward the Protestantenbond formed in 1870. Ten Cate was an editor of the Dutch Mennonite weekly, De Zondagsbode, from October 1890 to November 1894. His article in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1894, 71-115, "Wat kan voor onze Broeders en Zusters in de Verstrooiing gedaan worden" (What Can Be Done for Our Brethren and Sisters in the Diaspora), gave rise to the Commissie tot de Verstrooiden (a committee which looked after Mennonites living where there are no congregations and provided for regular visits to them). A special service of ten Cate was his research in the archives on old Mennonite families. Some of the fruits of his work were published in the Zondagsbode, and he bequeathed much of the data he collected to the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde
