Johan Engelbert van Brakel, born 31 August 1882 at Amsterdam, died 14 August 1950 at Baarn, was a prominent Dutch Mennonite minister. He studied theology at the University of Amsterdam and the Mennonite Seminary and finished his studies in 1907, being then a ministerial candidate. Successively he served the congregations of Witmarsum-Pingjum 1908-1914, Hollum on the island of Ameland 1914-1928, Koog-Zaandijk 1928-1946, and Baarn 1946-1947.

Van Brakel was warmly interested in missions. For many years he was a member of the board of the Dutch Mennonite Mission Society. In 1925, when a large number of Tobanese immigrants settled on the territory of Groot-Mandailing on the island of Sumatra (then Dutch East Indies), van Brakel actively advocated the preaching of the Gospel to this Tobanese people. This project was financially especially supported by the congregation of Heubuden in West Prussia .

After a visit to the Quakers at Woodbrooke, England, deeply impressed by their activities, van Brakel together with his colleagues T. O. Hylkema and C. Nijdam in 1917 founded the Vereeniging voor Gemeentedagen van Doopsgezinden in Nederland (see Gemeenschap voor Doopsgezind Broederschapswerk). From October 1922 to November 1928 he was the editor of the periodical of this association, called Brieven, in which van Brakel wrote valuable essays, for example those on the Old Testament prophets and on Islam. He published some booklets for catechetical classes: Christelijk Geloof (1934); De verkondiging van de Evangelien (1940). Further publications included De Gerechtigheid, Kerngedachten uit de Brief aan de Romeinen (Lochem n.d. 1948); De Knecht des Heren (an introduction to 2 Corinthians) (Lochern n.d. 1950) and a paper on "Justificatio en Sanctificatio bij Paulus," in Nederlands theologisch tijdschrift (1942) II, 98-123.
