Bel is a Dutch Mennonite family, formerly living at Amsterdam. Pieter Bel, a merchant at Hoorn and precentor of the Mennonite congregation in his home town, was an ardent Patriot, who had to flee from the country in 1787 or 1788 with the Mennonite deacon Pieter Houttuyn of Hoorn because of their political activity. They lived at Brussels, Belgium, until about 1795, when they returned.
