Hendrik van Arnhem (Henric van Aernem), "with the crippled foot," a tailor from the district of Kleve, Germany, was an elder in the Anabaptist congregation at Antwerp, Belgium. The martyr Bartel had a conversation with him there about Mary van Beckum. Little is known about this elder. He was apparently prominent. The Amsterdam authorities had put a price upon his head, which was raised in 1566 to 200 Caroli-guilders. Among those he baptized were the martyrs Jan Ghijselinck, Gheert Vermandele, Martijnken Meere, and Belijnken de Jaghere, in the presence of about 20 other Anabaptists. He also played the role of arbitrator in the dispute between the Frisians and the Flemish, having been called for that purpose as a buitenleraar to Friesland several times during the winter of 1566-1567. He sided with the Flemish, but was accused by some fanatics of sympathy for the Frisians. In 1570 he was still an elder.
