Franken (Francken, Vranken) family
Franken (Francken, Vranken), a Mennonite family, originally from Burgsteinfurt, Germany.
- Everwijn Franken migrated about 1620 from Burgsteinfurt to Enschede, Dutch province of Overijssel.
- Jan Franken, born at Burgsteinfurt 1659, died Enschede in 1764 at the age of nearly 105 years. He was precentor (chorister) of the Enschede congregation, and in 1684 married Hendrikje Willink. They had no children.
- Everwijn Francken, grandson of (1) Everwijn, dates of birth and death unknown, was married to Anneken van Lochern of Enschede. He was a Mennonite preacher at Zutphen about 1690 until his death (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1881, 46ft).
- Isaäk Franken, son of the foregoing (3) Everwijn, born about 1680 at Zutphen, died 1738 at Utrecht, was trained 1699-1705 by Galenus Abrahamsz of Amsterdam and served the congregation of Kleve 1707-1713 and Utrecht 1713-1738. While at Kleve he was active on behalf of a number of Swiss Brethren who were being transported to America in 1710, and who were released in Nijmegen, Holland, and traveled to the Palatinate via Kleve (Huizinga, 26; Müller, 272 f.).
- Jan Franken, youngest son of (3) Everwijn, years of birth and death unknown and of whom it is not clear whether he was trained by his father (see Inv. Arch. Amst. II, Nos. 2396 ff.), or studied at the Remonstrant Seminary at Amsterdam, succeeded his father as a preacher in Zutphen, where he served (year of beginning unknown) until 1731. In this year he was suspended because of misconduct. By the intercession of the church board of Amsterdam he was again admitted to the pulpit but suspended anew in 1734. In 1735 he received a call to the small congregation of Nieuwvliet in Cadzandt, where he served until 1753. (Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1881, 48; 1889, 114-115; Inv. Arch. Amst. II, Nos. 2400-10; 1662-74.)
- Jan Franken, born 23 October 1726 at Leiden, died there (year unknown). He was a son of Matthijs Franken, a beer brewer, who served the Mennonite congregation between 1684 and 1722, eight periods as a deacon; his sons Matthijs and Pieter were also deacons. Jan Franken studied at the University of Leiden and 1748-1751 at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary. Then he served as minister at Zwolle (1751-1756) and Harlingen (1756-1763). Evidently he was a man of troublesome character, quick-tempered, and resentful. Disharmony arose on an unimportant matter between him on one side and the church board of Harlingen and his copreacher Johannes Stinstra on the other; he moved to Leiden and devoted himself to his father's brewery.
