Franz Kolb, a reformer in Bern, Switzerland, was a native of Lörrach, Baden, Germany. He studied at the University of Basel, acquiring a Master’s degree. After working three years in Bern (1512-1514) he moved to Nürnberg. Through Berchthold Haller’s mediation he came back to Bern, and became a fiery promoter of the Reformation. Kolb helped Haller compose the ten Schlussreden, which served as the basis for the disputation in Bern (1528), which ended in a decisive victory for the Reformation.

In Anabaptist history Kolb is of importance for his debates with some of the Swiss Brethren. The first one took place on 21 May 1527, with Hunger, Peter Breyt, the “Seckler” Math. Han, Bastian Hammer, and Steffan Haffner. In early February 1530 Kolb and Kaspar Grossman, in the presence of the Council, tried to convert the Swiss Brethren leader, Konrad Eichacher, by means of Romans 8, but was not successful. He also took part in the discussion with Hans Pfistermeyer in Aarau on 19 April 1531, where the preachers had better success. Franz Kolb died in Bern on 11 November 1535.
