Jan de Smet (d. 1568)
Jan de Smet (Smit) of Ghent, Belgium, by trade a yarn twister, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake on 25 May 1568 at Ghent. His name is celebrated in the song "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert jaer ende twee en tsestich mede," found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, edition of 1578 and later editions. Van Braght, who calls this martyr Jan de Smid, does not mention the date of execution.
