Berendge (d. 1553)
Berendge (or Beerenthien Beerentsdochter), an Anabaptist martyr, executed at Leeuwarden, Dutch province of Friesland, 2 May 1553, together with Tijs. She had poor health and was mostly confined to her bed. But her faith was sound and strong and she refused to recant, but persisted to the bitter end. She was secretly drowned in the town moat, being bound in a sack and thrown from a boat. For Berendge and Tijs a song was composed, "Een nieue liet heb ic gedicht, van twee schaep wtgecoren" (A new song I have made of two chosen sheep), which is found in the Dutch songbook Veelderhande Liedekens and is included by Wackernagel.
