Veen family
Veen, a Dutch Mennonite family, which had its origin in Zuidveen between Steenwijk and Giethoorn in the province of Overijssel. Its ancestor as far as known was a certain Luitjen (Luutgen), who came here to dig peat. His son Hendrik Luitjens was a lay preacher ca. 1730-d. 1757 of the Zuidveen congregation of Danzig Old Flemish Mennonites, as were his relatives Wicher Egberts serving until ca. 1767 and Reinder Pieters 1764-d. 1802. In the 18th century some members of this family moved to Zaandam. This branch adopted Veen as its family name. Willem Veen (1716-1795) left Zuidveen and settled at Purmerend. His son Hendrik (1763-1846) moved to Sneek, where he was a tanner. This Hendrik had four sons: Anthony (1792-1872) was the founder of a large grocery store at Sneek; Willem (1795-1851), who accompanied the Napoleon as a "garde d'honneur" in his campaign to Russia in 1812-13, was later a wine merchant at Sneek, as was his brother Lambertus (1809-1899). The other son was Pastor Pieter Hendricsz Veen.
To this family also belong Lambertus Jacobus Veen (Sneek, 1863-Amsterdam, 1919), a publisher at Amsterdam, Egbertus Veen (Sneek, 1853-Baarn, 1944), a banker at Sneek and for many years a deacon of the Mennonite congregation, and Egbert A. Veen (Sneek, 1870-Zaandam, 1952), a director of the Verkade factories at Zaandam, deacon of the Westzaandam congregation and trustee of the Schoorl Brotherhood Home. Wicher Veen, b. 1920, pastor of IJmuiden 1949-55 and Amsterdam-den Ilp since 1955, also descends from this family.
