Ydse Gaukes, an Anabaptist martyr, who after much torture was burned at the stake at Deventer, Netherlands, on 16 June 1571 (not July 16, as stated in Martyrs' Mirror and Mennonitisches Lexicon). He was arrested by the Spanish soldiers at Deventer on 11 March 1571, with his wife Anneken and ten other Mennonites. (For detailed information, see Anneken.) Ydse Gaukes wrote three letters from prison. His first letter, dated 31 March, addressed to his brother and his friends, contains moving particulars about the tortures of the prisoners. In his second letter, undated, he sends greetings to W. and L. J. at Molkwerum in Friesland, from where he probably came. He was a boatman. His third letter, written only two days before his death, is a farewell letter to his brothers Bauke, Simon, and Pieter. When he wrote this letter most of his fellow prisoners had already been executed.
