Grietgen Baets (d. 1569)
Grietgen Baets, an Anabaptist martyr, was arrested in Ghent, Belgium, in 1569 with Christoffel Buyze, Laurens van Rentergem, and Joost Meerssenier. They paid for their joyful confession and steadfastness with their death, and are celebrated with a large number of martyrs of Ghent in a song found in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, beginning "Alsmen schreef duyst vijfhondert Jaer, ende twee en tsestich mede." Grietgen is listed here as No. 38. Verheyden (Gent, 56) did not find this martyr in the sources at Ghent.
