Floh, Jacob Hendrik (1758-1830)
Jacob Hendrik Floh was a Dutch Mennonite preacher and author, born 1758 at Krefeld, Germany, the son of Johannes Floh and Arnoida Albertine Mauritz. He is probably the Hendrik Floh who was baptized at Kleve in 1776. He studied at the Mennonite Seminary in Amsterdam 1777-1783, was called as preacher to Nijmegen in 1783, but moved to Enschede in the same year, and remained there until 1829, with the exception of a few years devoted to politics. He died in Enschede on 25 March 1830. He was an ardent Patriot and took an enthusiastic part in the events leading up to the revolution of 1795. In 1796 he was elected to the States-General of Holland, and was for a time secretary of the first chamber of the body representing the "Batavian Republic." He was a member of the committee of popular representatives that planned the separation of church and state. Then he returned to the pulpit. In 1800 he was also made school inspector of the province of Overijssel, and later secretary of the provincial board of education. . . industrieschoolen, 1813; Volksgeluk zonder volksdeugd onbestaanbaar, 1822. He won several contests put on by learned societies. In addition he wrote: Proeve eener beredeneerde verklaaringe der geschiedenissen van's Heilands verzoekinge in de woestijne, 1790; and Iets over bedestonden, 1817. In the States-General meeting on 23 August 1796 he advocated granting the rights of citizenship to the Jews. On this question several polemics were published by E. Kist and others; Floh was defended by J. Brouwer of the Mennonite Church at Leeuwarden.
