Faith Mennonite Church (Newton, Kansas, USA)
Faith Mennonite Church (originally Newton Mennonite Fellowship), 2100 North Anderson, Newton, Kansas, was the beginning of a third Mennonite congregation in the city of Newton. It was formed to minister to the growing Mennonite population in Newton. On 17 September 1956 the board of deacons of the First Mennonite Church, which took the lead in forming the new congregation, met in joint session with the board of deacons of the Bethel College Mennonite Church, when action was taken to invite the Western District Home Missions Committee to assist in guiding further developments. The Home Missions Committee called a meeting of the pastors and church board members of all the Western District Conference churches located within an approximate radius of 30 to 35 miles of Newton. During this meeting, at which 23 congregations were represented, the following motion was adopted: "Moved that the Home Mission Committee take necessary steps toward the establishment and organization of a third Mennonite Church in Newton, Kansas." A survey revealed interest and a fertile field for another Mennonite church. After several meetings with interested individuals, the first public worship service was called for the evening of 24 February 1957, which took place in the Sister Frieda Memorial Chapel.
Sister Frieda Chapel became the home of the new congregation from 24 March 1957 until 15 April 1962 when a new building at Northridge & Anderson was dedicated. By October 1957 they called Howard Nyce to be their first pastor.
