Jenneken van Houte (d. 1557)

Janneken van Houte (Houtte), an Anabaptist martyr, not found in van Braght, <em>Martyrs' Mirror</em>, but likely identical with Janneken op Dextelaer, named by van Braght. She was born at Antwerp, Belgium, and belonged to the Mennonite congregation in this town. Janneken, a jonckmeyssen (a young or unmarried woman), was bound in a sack and drowned at the Steen castle at Antwerp on 5 or 6 July 1557. This martyr may be the author of the song "Verhuecht verblijt groot ende cleyn" (Be glad and rejoice, both great and small) found in the <em>Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren</em>.
