Hendrik van Vreden (16th century)
Hendrik (Hendrick, Henric) van Vreden (Vreeden) was a Mennonite elder, co-worker with Menno Simons, ordained by Menno and Dirk Philips in 1542. Of his work almost nothing is known. His field of activity seems to have been Westphalia, Germany. He was present at the conference of Mennonite elders in Emden in 1547 and likely at that of Goch in the same year. The superintendent of police who examined the martyr Jacques d' Auchy at Leeuwarden in 1558 reckoned Hendrik van Vreden among the most important Anabaptist leaders (Offer, 274).
In an old Dutch list of elders, Copia der Outsten (Vos, 256-257) is found, "1550 Hindrick van Vreede is afgevallen." This does not necessarily mean that he had recanted or left the church; it probably means that he was no longer in harmony with Menno. Nothing is, however, known of such discord.
