Europäische Mennonitische Bibelschule (Ecole Biblique Européenne), opened at Arnold Böcklinstrasse 11, Basel, Switzerland, at that time the Mennonite Central Committee European headquarters office, was founded on the initiative of Harold S. Bender on 20 March 1950. Members of the school board at the founding were: Hans Nussbaumer, France; Christian Schnebele, Germany; Pierre Widmer, France; Samuel Gerber, Switzerland; C. F. Klassen, Canada-Germany; and the current Mennonite Central Committee director of Europe. Later it was decided to elect on the school board two representatives from each of the supporting conferences. These conferences were the Pfälzisch-Hessische Conference, Gemeindeverband, Swiss Conference, Alsatian Conference, and the French Conference. The president of the board since its beginning was Hans Nussbaumer, Schweighof, France. Samuel Gerber of Les Reussilles, Switzerland, was director of this school 1950-52, Cornelius Wall of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, since 1952. The Mennonite Central Committee helped in many respects to start and operate this school., Since students from all over Europe attended the school, courses were conducted in French and German. There were ca. 60 students in 1955. Originally the term of the Bible school was 4 weeks; in 1955 it was extended to 10 weeks. At that time it was hoped to extend the term to 12 weeks in the winter, and add a short summer term. The school was moved to Starenstrasse 41 in Basel in 1953, when the Mennonite Central Committee headquarters was moved to that address. The purpose of the school was to acquaint young people with the Word of God and to train them as Sunday-school teachers, youth workers, and for other church service.
