Schweitzer, Heinrich (16th century)
Heinrich Schweitzer, a Hutterite missioner from Moravia, who with Uhl Schuester and Bastl (Wastl) Anfang, the latter a minister, was arrested near Bern in Switzerland in 1585, and imprisoned in Bern for 20 weeks. After three doctrinal examinations (in the first 14 days) and repeated vain attempts to get the brethren to disclose where they had secured lodging, the council made preparations for the execution and gave them their "final" meal. But popular vote opposed the execution. Heinrich and Uhl were beaten and had their ears burned through and were whipped to the border. Later Bastl was also released. All three returned safely to the brotherhood in Moravia. See also Bastl Schmid.
