Barent Backer (d. 1535)
Barent Backer was a citizen of the town of Zwolle in the Dutch province of Overijssel. He was rebaptized at this place by Gerrit Boeckbinder, who also laid on him the office of the ministry (leeraar). He read from the Scriptures and preached but did not baptize. After waiting first at Zwolle, he later went to Münster where he was in the service of Jan van Leyden. He was imprisoned at Amsterdam in June 1535. Just when he had left Münster is not known. He was placed on trial and tortured on 14 July and on 28 July 1535 condemned to be put to death by decapitation and then drawn and quartered.
