Washington County, Iowa, in the southeastern part of the state, has Mennonite settlements in two areas, i.e., in the northern and the southern tiers of townships. The Johnson County settlement to the north has spread south into the northern Washington County townships of Lime Creek, English River, and Iowa. In Lime Creek are Wellman and Daytonville, each with a Mennonite church. Kalona is in English River and the location of the Kalona Mennonite Church and the Pleasant View Home for the Aged. A short distance east of Kalona is the Sunnyside Mennonite Church. The Old Order Amish settlement of Johnson County has also expanded into the northern part of Washington County. Near the center of the county is the county seat of Washington, in which a number of Mennonite families reside. The Mennonites in Marion Township in the southern tier of counties are a part of the Henry County settlement bordering Washington County on the south. In Marion Township are the Bethel Mennonite Church and the Eicher Emanuel Mennonite Church. In 1958 Mennonites began to hold services in the Eureka church in Marion Township. The Eicher church is a General Conference Mennonite congregation, while the others in the country are Mennonite Church and Conservative Mennonite. The total Mennonite and Amish membership living in the county in the late 1950s was ca. 600.
