Grietgen Bonaventuers (Margriete van Halle, widow of Willem Eggertink), an Anabaptist martyr, was seized 20 May 1559 in Antwerp, Belgium. In the pursuit of an Anabaptist the bailiffs forced their way into homes where Grietgen and five other Anabaptist women were living. Not finding the man they sought, they imprisoned the women. Neither threats nor torture caused them to forsake their faith. They all died as martyrs. Grietgen Bonaventuers was drowned in Antwerp, 12 October 1559, not beheaded as the Groot Offerboek of 1613 and also van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror erroneously assert (DB 1899, 107). In memory of Grietgen and the women who suffered martyrdom with her a song was written, which begins, "Babels raets mandamenten" (Een liedeken van ses vrouwen), and also in the song, "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader," both found in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren (Nos. 16 and 19).
