Frans Dammasz (Frans van Bolsward, or Francis of Bolsweert), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake, 28 March 1545 at Leeuwarden, Dutch province of Friesland, having been seized because of his refusal to give an oath. In prison he wrote the song, "Wei hem die in Gods vreeze staat" (Blessed is the man, who is God-fearing), which is included in the Dutch hymnbook Veelderhande Liedekens of 1569 and many other Dutch songbooks, and Wackernagel, Lieder, 97. This song, translated into German, "Wol dem der in Gottes Forchten steht," is also found in the old Anabaptist German hymnbook, Ein schön Gesängbüchlein Geistlicher Lieder. At his execution his flesh had miraculously refused to burn, according to the song, "Verhuecht u Gods kinder alletijt," in Het Offer des Heeren.
