Wijnands (Wynands, Wynants, Wynanz), a family name formerly rather common in the Netherlands. Mennonite branches, some of which could not be traced back to a common ancestor, formerly lived at Haarlem, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Harlingen, and other places. A Wynands Mennonite family living at Hamburg, Germany, from the 17th century was of Dutch descent. At Haarlem some Wijnands were deacons in the 17th-19th centuries, in Rotterdam in the 19th century. There have also been some Mennonite ministers by this name. Jan Wynants, born ca. 1596, was a preacher(?) of the Haarlem Flemish congregation in the early 17th century. Willem Wynands (1630-58) was a preacher at Hamburg-Altona.

Abraham Wynands, born December 1703 at Altona, died there 29 August 1790, was a preacher from 1727, and an elder ca. 1750 of the Hamburg-Altona congregation. He had been trained for the ministry by Abraham Verduin, pastor of Koog aan de Zaan. Gerrit Karsdorp published a funeral sermon on his death, Stand- en Gedagtenis-Rede over Abr. Wynands (Altona, 1790).

Another Abraham Wijnands, of Harlingen in Friesland, was trained for the ministry 1767-72 at the Amsterdam Lamist seminary. He served as pastor at Middelburg 1773-77 and Utrecht 1777-83, in which year he retired. His farewell sermon, Leerreden, waarin de Godsdienst wordt aangeprezen, was published at Haarlem, 1785.

Wijnand Peters Wijnands (Winands, Wynantz), d. 1777 at Krefeld, Germany, was the last unsalaried preacher of the Krefeld Mennonite church, serving 1729-73, in which year he retired.
