Faber, Engelbert (d. 1580)
Engelbert Faber, born near Cologne, Germany, was ordained as minister in P. Dathenus' refugee church of Frankfurt in 1561, was a Reformed minister at Wolfsheim near Alzey in the Palatinate, in the Lower Rhine region, and in the Netherlands. In a letter to H. Bullinger dated 23 April 1562, at Alzey, he said concerning his contacts with the Anabaptists along the Lower Rhine, it "was a bitter thought that he could not present his word in an appropriate manner while these simpletons accept Anabaptist heresies in masses, and yet he could not be silent." He reported that he had now found a copy of the book by Bernhard Buwo, Een frundtlyke thosamensprekinge . . . (1556, in Low Saxon; in 1557 a Dutch edition appeared), directed against the Mennonites, which he had translated into German, asking Bullinger whether he found it appropriate to have it published. Bullinger's reply must have been favorable. In 1563 in Heidelberg his book entitled Dialogus: Das ist, Ein gespräch zweyer Personen, von dem Taufer jungen Kinder . . . appeared. He was a participant in the Frankenthal disputation of 1571. In 1575 he became a pastor in Gau-Odernheim, and in 1580 he died at Venlo on the Maas.
